What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is one of a family of Specific Learning Difficulties and can vary considerably from individual to individual. An explanation of dyslexia can be defined as:
"A learning difficulty primarily affecting skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. The main characteristics are difficulties in phonological processing, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. Dyslexia occurs across the range of intellectual abilities. " (The Rose Review, 2009:11)
The above quotation points out how dyslexia can take many forms. For this reason, it is not always easy to identify, particularly if your child has developed strategies to hide their struggles. They may have difficulty remembering or processing information, which can often be harder to identify.
It is important to point out that dyslexia is not a measure of intelligence and many famous scientists and entrepreneurs are dyslexic, for example, Albert Einstein, Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver and James Dyson.
